Knowing just a little about how the publishing world works, the incredible avalanche of praise for Junot Diaz's "Oscar Wao" got my spider sense tingling. This novel will win at least a few of the major literary prizes in the coming year.
Here is the first: the Sargent First Novel prize. Diaz was up against some hot-and-heavy hitters: Ehud Havazelet (Bearing the Body), Mischa Berlinski (Fieldwork), Jon Clinch (Finn), Daniel Alarcón (Lost City Radio), Nathan Englander (The Ministry of Special Cases) and Austin Grossman (Soon I Will Be Invincible).
Surprisingly, "Oscar Wao" was not nominated for the National Book Awards. But when prizes are announced Nov. 14, we'll be cheering for comadre Edwidge Danticat, who received a nod for her amazing "us-moir" "Brother I'm Dying."
"Brother, I'm Dying" is brilliant! I just wanted to let you know that Edwidge will be interviewed by Jonathan Demme at Symphony Space on Nov 28 as part of the Thalia Book Club series. More info is at http://www.symphonyspace.org/event/2144. Hope to see you there!
